How to create a risk analysis for your mission

Conducting a thorough risk analysis is a critical step in ensuring safe, compliant, and professional drone operations. This process helps you systematically identify potential hazards, assess the level of risk they pose, and implement effective control measures to mitigate them. A well-documented risk analysis is often a regulatory requirement and is essential for maintaining a strong safety culture.

1. Adding a New Risk

You can add risks to any mission, whether it's in the draft phase or is an existing mission you are updating.

  1. From the main sidebar, open an existing Mission or create a new one.

  2. Inside the mission editor, ensure you are on the main Info tab.

  3. Scroll down to the Risk Analysis section and click the + Add Risk button.

2. Conducting the Initial Assessment

A form will open for you to complete the first step: evaluating the 'raw' risk before considering any safety actions.

Fill out the following fields:

  • Title: Enter a short and concise title for the potential risk (e.g., "High Winds," "Operations Near People").

  • Description: Briefly describe the hazard in more detail.

  • Initial Severity: Give the risk a severity rating, from Insignificant to Catastrophic.

  • Initial Probability: Give the risk a probability rating, from Rare to Almost Certain.

Once you set these two ratings, the system will automatically calculate an Initial Risk Score based on the risk matrix. The outcome will be displayed as Acceptable, Moderate, or Unacceptable.

3. Applying Mitigating Measures

If the Initial Risk Score is Moderate or Unacceptable, you must define mitigating measures to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

In the second half of the form, fill out these fields:

  • Mitigating Measures: Describe the specific actions and procedures you will put in place to control the risk (e.g., "Establish a 100ft buffer zone from the public," "Postpone flight if wind gusts exceed 20 mph").

  • Final Severity: Re-assess the severity of the risk with your mitigating measures in place.

  • Final Probability: Re-assess the probability of the risk with your mitigating measures in place.

The system will then use these new ratings to calculate the Final Risk Score. The goal is to ensure all identified risks are brought to an Acceptable level before you proceed with the mission.
